Recently, Putin has warned the US Navy and President Donald Trump that the Navy should stay away from the Russian airspace inside Greenland. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is strategically significant due to its location in the Arctic, hosting the U.S. Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), which supports missile defense and early warning systems. Russia has expressed concerns over U.S. ambitions in Greenland, particularly in response to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump about acquiring the island for national security purposes. Russian officials, including Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko and Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin, have warned that U.S. actions in Greenland could violate international law and destabilize the Arctic, potentially prompting Russian “military and technical measures” if tensions escalate.

Regarding airspace, Russian military aircraft have conducted operations near U.S. and Canadian airspace, including in the Arctic, but these have typically remained in international airspace, such as the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) near Alaska. There is no direct evidence of Russian warnings specifically about U.S. Navy operations in Russian airspace over Greenland, as Greenland is not within Russian territory or airspace. Russia’s concerns appear more focused on broader U.S. military presence in the Arctic, including Greenland, and NATO’s activities in the region. Recently, the people of Denmark stood against Donald Trump and supported the government of Greenland because they do not want Trump to acquire Greenland and spread instability in the Arctic region as well as in NATO, Europe and North America as well as in the Nordic countries. Greenland is surrounded by several airspaces including Denmark, Canada, Russia, US, Iceland and EU military involvements. Greenland fears that its all economic partners, investors and army shareholders like Denmark (60%), Sweden (20%), Spain (9%) and Icland (7%) or Canada may accept Trump’s offer to handover the Nuuk to US territorial control.
