This action followed reported drone attacks on the flotilla, which Italy condemned, though it did not directly attribute the attacks to Israel. Meloni has signaled openness to recognizing a Palestinian state, provided two conditions are met: the release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the exclusion of Hamas from any future Palestinian government.
